The odd goings-on ahead of this £750 million Northgate-Redde merger...

The market was a tad surprised by this morning's announcement about Northgate's all-share merger of Redde, which provides replacement vehicle, repair and recovery services to insurance company customers.

Not least because just a couple of days ago around 45 million Redde shares changed hands, which effectively saw Neil Woodford's defunct outfit (now controlled by Blackrock) and his old colleague Mark Barnett of Invesco Perputual cleared out (or partially cleared out) of the stock...

Ingenico, the French payment terminals company, is said to have now rejected a recent takeover approach from Worldline.

People following the situation said Worldline, another French payments company, is rumoured to have submitted a takeover proposal to Ingenico valuing the business at EURO 120 a share but this has been rebuffed by the latter.

Some people had heard Worldline is preparing to raise its offer to EURO 130 a share...

It's pretty quiet in UK private equity land at the moment. No surprises there given the fact there is a general election coming up in a month in what is likely to be one of the most unpredictable votes of all time despite what the polls say. Remember, the polls got it completely wrong in 2015.

So, several London-based buy-out heads have told Betaville they are sitting on there on hands at the moment, waiting to see what the outcome of the election is...
